Technical Apprenticeship School in Alesd

Starting with September 15th, Holcim (Romania) introduced a 2 year apprenticeship program for training young people. After the program, the 15 apprentices studying in Alesd Center will become highly qualified for the cement technician position, filling vacancies at Holcim, and having a government recognised certificate.

"We intend to develop qualified professional workforce and offer education opportunities in the local area. The cement technician graduates we train will be able to maintain and repair installations, machinery and equipment, monitor, operate and control the manufacturing of cement, perform chemical and physical laboratory analyses. Graduates will also have career opportunities within Holcim, as foremen or shift managers", said Markus Wirth, Country Manager Holcim (Romania).

The program supports the cement technician to take responsibilities, apply safety procedures at the workplace and activate well in a team. Also, the students will learn how to work in compliance with environmental protection procedures and regulations, deal with changes, new situations and innovations and creatively solve problems.

The target group for apprentices is made up by high school graduates or graduates from School of Arts & Jobs with High School certificate, youngsters from 18 to 24 years old living in Alesd, Turda and Campulung area.The duration of the program is 2+1 years, out of each, in the last year, the students will be employed by Holcim (Romania). The first 2 years are conducted as a Post High School program as Cement Technician in cooperation with "Alexandru Roman" highschool in Alesd. The 3rd year is an internship program working in their area of specialization - mechanical, electrical, cement manufacturing, quality assurance or other jobs where technical knowledge and skills are an asset.

Apprentices will have at their hand the tools required in their future work, and will also learn how to use a computer, having access to an IT lab equipped with Internet access. They also have access to the plant library, containing operation manuals, technical documentation and other plant relevant documents.

The program and its location is based in the industrial environment of the plant in Alesd. The main elements are: on the job training, workshop modules and theory classes. In order to optimize learning, the timetable considers production schedules, while attending theory classes and workshop modules is compulsory for all apprentices. Projects, case studies, problem-based learning and exercises are used as instructional methods throughout the whole apprenticeship program to make the program workplace relevant, increase problem-solving skills, enhance critical thinking and build team working skills and behaviours.

During the 3rd year, the students will work in a selected department of specialization. Specialization selection is based on interest and performance of the apprentice during the first two years and considers also human resources need.
