8 Februarie 2012

Holcim Romania organizes today at the cement plant in Campulung the Open Day with the theme "Quarries rehabilitation: a sustainable initiative". The event is attended by central and local authorities, clients, media representatives and local community.

Over 2,000 participants are expected at this event. They will visit the Dealul Hulei- Mateias limestone quarry and will receive information about the program for the continuous rehabilitation of the quarries Holcim Romania runs and operates. The program for the day also includes a concert, activities for children, various surprises, food and beverages. This Open Day event is a continuation of the initiative which took place last year - "Today's solutions for tomorrow's benefits: Waste co-processing".

The Open Day events in the cement plants of Holcim Romania are part of the transparent communication of the company with all stakeholders. Since the environmental protection is one of the priorities of Holcim Romania, the Open Day events, which took place last year and this year, focused on issues related to the environment. This activity complements the social responsibility programs the company develops for raising awareness of environmental issues.

"We have been constantly developing and implementing strategies for environmental protection at European standards in all our cement and ready-mixed concrete plants, in the development of environmentally-friendly products and services, and in various other related projects. Moreover, our efficient communication with all stakeholders contributes to increasing the awareness for the environmental issues and the responsibility for solving them," said Markus Wirth, Country Manager of Holcim Romania.

The extraction of limestone and clay in the quarries is one of the activities, which have an impact on the landscape and the environment. Through different technical solutions, Holcim Romania minimizes this impact and, in addition, the company has tailor-made plans for the rehabilitation of all operational quarries so that these exploitation areas are integrated into the environment, by taking into consideration the options of all parties involved and by ensuring the functioning of the eco-system and the biodiversity.

"All our activities are designed and implemented so that they have the least significant impact on the landscape and environment and even to contribute to a healthier environment. In this respect, we have customized plans for the rehabilitation of the quarries we exploit. In addition, the cement plant in Campulung is equipped with installations for waste co-processing. We offer this environmental service, which has three major advantages: safe elimination of waste without any harm to the environment and health, preservation of natural resources by partial substitution of traditional fuels and raw materials with alternative ones, and reduction of greenhouse emissions that would be generated in case of elimination of waste by landfilling or incineration," said Emil Raicov, Campulung Cement Plant Manager.

The environmental protection is a priority for Holcim Romania, representing one of the three guidelines that shape the sustainable development concept of the company, together with economic growth and social responsibility. Thus, the company invested over EUR 20 million in environmental protection during the period 1998- 2005. This year Holcim Romania invests about EUR 2.5 million in environmental protection projects.
