Holcim (Romania) S.A. Ciment Turda continues this year the tradition of being a responsible citizen of Turda. The company arranged an area of the Tineretului Park with flowers, shrubs and benches, in the vicinity of the playground space inaugurated last year by Holcim Romania.

The strategy of Holcim Romania is based on the concept of sustainable development through the simultaneous implementation of the three guidelines: economic growth, environmental protection and social responsibility. The economic growth and healthy financial returns are the decisive factors that enable the company to contribute to the development of the society and to provide a sustainable future to the people.

Holcim (Romania) S.A. Ciment Turda has a tradition in developing social responsibility projects such as "Create your environment"- educational program for environmental protection designed for pupils, "Build your future!"- training and personal development courses for high-school students, the series of projects "We care"- competitions which demonstrate the ability of high-school students to identify environmental problems and suggest solutions.

"Holcim Romania is actively involved in supporting the communities in which we are active, both through educational programs and environmental protection projects, and also through donations and sponsorships. Thus, we continuously evaluate the needs of the local communities and develop social responsibility programs at the level of each community. Such an example is the refurbishment of the Tineretului Park in Turda," said Markus Wirth, Country Manager of Holcim Romania.

The environmental protection is one of the priorities of Holcim Romania. The company continuously searches for new environmental solutions, invests considerably in the development of environmentally-friendly products and services, and contributes to raising awareness of environmental issues through various social responsibility programs.

Referring to economic growth, as part of sustainable development, Holcim Romania has been investing since 1997 over EUR 34 million in the modernization of the cement plant in Turda.

"All our investments are made with a long-term view on development. In 2007 the cement plant in Turda will benefit from investments worth some EUR 4 million for projects related to grey cement terminal, aggregates segment and production of special cements," said Calin Moldovan, Turda Cement Plant Manager.

The price for natural gas, which is the fossil energy used for burning the limestone to clinker for white cement, has been constantly and significantly increasing during the past years. Therefore, the plant in Turda will produce more clinker this year, which will be used for the production of white cement next year. The further development of the production cost, considering the tremendous increases of the energy cost, will be analyzed in detail during the next months. The supply of white cement to the customers in Romania as well as in the neighboring countries will be maintained.
