Holcim (Romania) continues the sales of white cement by the end of 2007. The focus of the Turda plant will be the grey cement terminal, the production of high quality aggregates and tailor-made products for special applications.
Ten years after taking over the cement plant in Turda, Holcim (Romania) reconsidered its local product portfolio.
Currently, the cement plant in Turda operates as an integrated business unit, with three main operations:
- white cement production;
- aggregates production (filler and limestone);
- grey cement terminal.
The repetitive augmentation of natural gas price led to the decision of stopping in 2008 the production of white cement. The continuous increase of the gas price has a negative influence on the production cost, which is reflected in the level of white cement sales. The white cement production process at the plant in Turda uses only natural gas as thermal energy.
"Our vision is to offer quality products and services at competitive prices. When this is no longer possible we consider as our duty to stop the production of such products. This means that our customers of white cement will be served in 2007 in the same professional manner. The plant in Turda will continue to function as a terminal for grey cement and as aggregates production pit," said Markus Wirth, Country Manager of Holcim (Romania).
The people involved in the production of white cement will go through training in order to be prepared for the future activities and projects at the plant in Turda.
"The cement plant in Turda is an important operational unit and we continue to invest here. This year the plant will benefit from investments worth some EUR 4 million for the implementation of new projects related to the grey cement terminal, the aggregates segment, and tailor-made products for special applications," said Calin Moldovan, Turda Cement Plant Manager.
