This year Holcim Romania will invest about EUR 2.5 million in environment protection projects, which represents an increase of some 78% as compared to 2005, when the investments related to the protection of environment amounted to EUR 1.4 million. During the period 1998 - 2005, the company invested over EUR 20 million in environmental protection.

The environmental protection is a priority and a consistent objective for Holcim Romania, representing one of the three guidelines that shape the sustainable development concept of the company, together with economic growth and social responsibility.

"For us, development does not mean just economic growth, it also means rational consumption of energy and resources, and also use of alternative fuels and raw materials. We always search for new solutions, develop new technologies and implement new strategies in order to have a cleaner environment for us and for the generations to come. This is why Holcim Romania continuously invests in upgrading production technology and in implementing innovative solutions," said Markus Wirth General Manager of Holcim Romania.

Holcim is the first Romanian ready-mixed concrete producer who implemented the concept of Environmental Friendly Ready-Mixed Concrete Plant in 2001 with the launch of the first such plant in Pitesti. Presently, all 15 ready-mixed concrete plants of Holcim Romania are environmentally-friendly. The implemented production technology is innovative and complies with the latest environmental standards: zero dust and noise emissions, and complete recycling of fresh concrete.

Holcim Romania is committed to promote, sustain and apply the best and most efficient environmental policy through reducing dust emissions, delivery of environmentally-friendly products and services, waste co-processing, and involvement in social projects for increasing the awareness on environmental protection issues.

The main environmental investments made by the company so far include modern dust filters for main and auxiliary production installations, continuous emissions monitoring equipment on kiln stacks, quarry rehabilitation, improvement of the water management system, and so on. The ISO 14001 environment management standard, granted by TUV Rheinland international certification body for all working units of Holcim Romania, stands as a proof of the company's commitment for a better and greener environment.
