Holcim (Romania) invested EUR 3.5 million in environmental protection in 2006

In 2006 the environmental investments amounted to EUR 3.5 million with 40% more that the initially estimated EUR 2.5 million. This year Holcim (Romania) will invest about EUR 2.8 million in environmental protection projects.

"The investments performed until now and the investments planned in the future for the environment protection are meeting the recent European Council agreement regarding the decrease of carbon emissions and the prevention against global warming. Holcim (Romania) has already implemented the Holcim Group and, thus, is aligned with the European Union standards," stated Markus Wirth, Country Manager of Holcim (Romania).

The environmental protection is a priority objective for Holcim (Romania), which invested EUR 23.5 million during the period 1998?- 2006 in environmental friendly technology. Holcim is the first Romanian ready-mixed concrete producer who implemented the concept of "environmental friendly ready-mixed concrete plant" in 2001 with the launch of the first such plant in Pitesti. Presently, all 15 ready-mixed concrete plants of Holcim Romania are environmental friendly.

The most important investments in environmental protection projects performed by Holcim (Romania) in 2006 were: modernization of the cement plant in Alesd in order to achieve a higher energy efficiency and to further reduce dust and greenhouse gas emissions; dust emission reduction at the cement plant in Turda; modernization of the cement plant in Campulung; further development of waste co-processing activities in the cement plants in Campulung and Alesd; social responsibility projects for increasing awareness and education on environmental issues: "Create Your Environment!", "We Care", the web portal www.societatedurabila.ro.

Holcim (Romania) invested in 2006 approximately EUR 57 million in a series of projects for the modernization of production technology, environmental protection, business development, occupational health and safety, social and human resources projects.
