For the second consecutive year, Holcim is the only company in Romania to launch a Sustainable Development Report. This second edition of the Report represents the essence of the activity and successes of Holcim Romania regarding economic performance, environmental protection and social responsibility - the three pillars of sustainable development.
Publishing this second Sustainable Development Report is one of the results of Holcim Romania open and transparent communication. The report offers all stakeholders complete and exact information on the main activity areas of the company.
"Holcim Romania strategy follows the principles of sustainable development by applying simultaneously the three direction lines - economic performance, environmental protection and corporate social responsibility. We aim to become the most respected and attractive company in our industry. We know we can achieve this only by respecting our promises, by offering best quality products and services, by having a constant dialog with our business partners and by acting as a responsible member of the society. Now, when the construction materials market in Romania is growing, Holcim Romania assumes an important role in supporting the constructors, entrepreneurs, infrastructure and urbanism projects, in order to insure the best quality of life, for the present and future generations." stated Markus Wirth, General Manager Holcim Romania.
This second edition of the Sustainable Development Report includes information on the company's vision and strategy, on the management systems and instruments, Holcim economic performance, and also about the investments and activities developed by the company in the field of environmental protection. The business behavior, employment practices, occupational health & safety, and community involvement are openly approached by Holcim representatives in a large chapter called social responsibility.
The investments of Holcim Romania are made taking into account a LONG TERM PERSPECTIVE. The company is committed to building long-lasting relationships with all stakeholders and to investing in plants, people and local communities.
For Holcim Romania, 2005 proved to be the best year in terms of financial and operational performance, a year when the company registered a turnover of approximately EUR 166.5 million, which means a 14% increase as compared to 2004. The overall investments made by Holcim Romania by the end of 2005 amount to more than EUR 334 million. An additional amount of 70 million EUR will be invested in 2006 in a number of projects related to modernizing production lines (including Campulung project), environment protection, business development, occupational health & safety, social projects and human resources.
OPTIMIZED and EFFICIENT management resources, quarry rehabilitation and waste management are part of Holcim environment policy and a PROMISE to the next generation.
Holcim Romania is committed to promote, sustain and apply a healthy environmental policy, through reducing gas emissions, delivering environmentally friendly products and co-processing waste for protecting natural resources. As a proof for this commitment, an ISO 14001 certification for environmental management for all locations was granted by TÜV Rheinland, an international certification body. Between 1998 and 2005, Holcim Romania invested over 20 million EUR in environmental protection.
Holcim Romania is ACTIVELY INVOLVED in the community life, continuously improves the development level of the employees and offers equal chances to individual growth.
Corporate social responsibility is one of the major issues for business development in this decade. For Holcim Romania, acting in a socially responsible manner is more than a collection of discrete practices and occasional initiatives motivated by marketing or public relations.
For Holcim Romania, social responsibility is a comprehensive set of practices and programs integrated into business operations and decision-making processes. The company is aware of its social responsibilities and runs various programs in the benefit of the communities situated around its plants.
The constant efforts of the company to satisfy the occupational health and safety requirements were once again recognized, at the end of 2005, by an audit conducted by Holcim Group, in cooperation with British Safety Council. This "green pyramid" certification, in addition to the one granted by TÜV in 2003, proves that the standards of the company are in accordance with the European regulations in the field. In 2005, more than EUR 50.000 were invested at company level for improving the occupational health and safety standards.
