Romanian Red Cross and Holcim (Romania) support the affected people in rebuilding the houses damaged by the landslides in Buzau County. 200 tons of cement donated by Holcim will get to the people in Nehoiu, whose houses have been totally or partially destroyed.

"Romanian Red Cross coordinated an assessment mission in the affected area and noticed a phenomenon considered unusual by the local people as well as by the authorities: the yards are crossed by small rivers that cause the houses to crumble. That's why urgent action for the reconstruction of the affected area is needed. We thank Holcim for the extremely prompt answer and the donation of materials for the reconstruction", says Dumitru Tisianu, representative of the Romanian Red Cross.

The first cement transport organized by the Romanian Red Cross with the support of Holcim (Romania) and the voluntary work of its employees will reach the affected people in Nehoiu on June 30th.

"Through this donation we do not only intend to provide emergency relief, but also to give hope to those that see their houses decay from one day to another. Holcim (Romania) has always been next to suffering people. We will continue to develop social responsibility projects, in line with the sustainable development concept that governs all the actions of our company", said Markus Wirth, General Manager, Holcim (Romania) SA.

85 people will benefit of Holcim donation. 7 of them have their houses destroyed and evacuated, 23 people have their houses badly damaged, and the houses of 55 people need consolidation works. The selection of the beneficiaries has been done by the Romanian Red Cross and Nehoiu City Hall.

The Romanian Red Cross carries out extensive humanitarian operations in support of people affected by the natural disasters that hit several counties since the end of April. On April 29, 2005, an international appeal for 1.055.000 CHF was launched through the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies for assisting the victims.

Holcim is also involved in the reconstruction of schools, houses and hospitals in the areas affected by floods in Banat, through a donation of 1,000 tons of cement.
