Holcim Romania supports the professional development of students in a project organized within the Technical High Schools in Bucharest

Bucharest, March 17th, 2015 – Holcim Romania, a leading supplier of cement, concrete and aggregates, is implementing a program intended to support the professional development of the students from the Technical High Schools in Bucharest.

The program is developed in partnership with “Anghel Saligny” Technical High School in Bucharest, as project coordinator, and was initiated in its current form at the beginning of the school year 2014 – 2015. Through this program, 24 students from the 9th – 12th grades and five teachers from five Technical High Schools in Bucharest – “Anghel Saligny” Technical High School, “Mihai Bravu” Technical High School, “Ion Socolescu” Technical High School, “Dante Aligheri” High School, “Elie Radu” School Group – benefited from practical extracurricular activities starting with the autumn of last year, meant to help them in their future professional development. Thus, the students were trained in the workshop from Anghel Saligny” High School to comply with occupational health and safety rules, to execute various types of masonry works, to prepare the materials according to the specific recipes and to use them correctly. As part of this program, Holcim Romania and “Anghel Saligny” Technical High School organized the “Skillful Mason” competition, during which teams of students from each high school had to apply the acquired theoretical and practical skills.

„The activities included in this unique program, implemented together with Holcim Romania, focused on the development of the practical abilities and the acquisition of the skills related to construction techniques and teamwork, which are key elements to achieve professional performance. We believe that prerequisites such as high quality professional qualification and solid educational standards are instrumental to ensuring that the high school graduate is able to cope with the real demands of the Romanian and European labor market”, declared Ioana Zlătoianu, coordinating teacher of the project implemented in “Anghel Saligny” Technical High School.

“The project we are currently implementing in partnership with Anghel Saligny Technical High School was developed starting from a real need, acknowledged on the Romanian market, namely to prepare and improve the workforce in constructions. We understood this need a long time ago, and we also became aware of the fact that in order to build a sustainable future, we also need to target the students from the technical high schools. We believe it is important to have an active and significant involvement in the training of the future generation of construction experts, by making our expertise and resources available, as we do through this project”, declared Alina Cristea, Sustainable Development Manager, Holcim Romania.

Holcim Romania and “Anghel Saligny” Technical High School are planning to extend the program at national level in the upcoming school years, by also involving other technical high school across the country.

In 2002, Holcim Romania launched the Masons’ School program, delivering training to approximately 550 mason-plasterers. The graduates of the Masons’ School have the opportunity to receive an official certificate of competences from the National Authority for Qualifications.

The Masons’ School is a free professional training program, specifically designed and developed for masons wishing to obtain a relevant specialization and to be up to date with the latest construction techniques and the best materials used in masonry.
