Holcim Romania invests for the second time in the community in Câmpulung, Arges County, rehabilitating the sports ground of the Secondary School CD Aricescu

Campulung, June 1st, 2016: On June 1st, Children's Day, Holcim Romania launched a new sports ground at the Secondary School CD Aricescu. To rehabilitate the sports ground, the company invested 20,000 euros, this initiative being part of the project named Holcim hands you the rally of good deeds. For the inauguration of the sports ground, a demonstrative football match was held between the pupils’ team and a selected team of Holcim Romania employees, in the presence of local authorities and the little ones who attend this school.
When you were a pupil, which was your favorite subject? When did you feel most free? What was the course that you expected out of breath, thinking that you will run to exhaustion? We all thought about physical education and certainly each of you has at least one pleasant memory on the sports ground. We enjoyed playing in the schoolyard and on the sports ground and we want that the delight of future generations be at least as high, if not higher.

The Secondary School CD Aricescu in Câmpulung hosts over 300 students aged 6-14 and inherited the traditions of the school established in the sixteenth century, with the building of the Royal Church by Lady Chiajna and her son, Peter the Younger. At that time, the school was located inside the church and the teachers were priests.

Since the the nineteenth century, the school functioned in several places in the southern part of the city and was a boys' school until 1956 when it merged with the girls’ school number 1. Since then the school activity was conducted on the site of the house of C.D.Aricescu, and thus the Secondary School CD Aricescu was founded.

The passion of the school’s pupils for the physical education class is proven by their results at the school competitions organized both locally and at county level. Only in the last two years the little athletes were winners in football, athletics, basketball and table tennis. Among the sporting achievements of the young people in Arges in 2015 - 2016, as part of the school sports Olympics, we can mention the first place in football – middle school, the second place in mini football, the second place in table tennis, and also the second place in basketball -middle school. The previous year, 2014 - 2015, was also marked by many sporting achievements: the second place in mini-football, the second place in football – middle school, the first place in table tennis and the third place in athletics.

"We are proud of the achievements of the little athletes over the last two years and we want to encourage these performances. Sport is important for children beyond these achievements, and physical education is the safest and handiest way to keep us fit and healthy. And if we, as adults, skip sometimes the physical effort in gyms, children should not be deprived of this activity, which, besides keeping them healthy, also gives them hours of entertainment and joy. Therefore we are very happy with Holcim Romania’s involvement in the refurbishment of our school sports ground. The company's initiative will help provide a better and happier future to the children in our community" said Dan Dănescu, Director of the Secondary School CD Aricescu in Câmpulung.

"Holcim Romania focuses on the development of the communities where it operates by refurbishing the sports grounds of some schools in the country, as part of the project “Holcim hands you the rally of good deeds”. We decided to invest in the future of the community and we pride ourselves in the rehabilitation of the second sports ground in Câmpulung, the town where our company owns a cement factory. It fills us with satisfaction and joy to see the euphoria on the faces of the little athletes and we look forward to enjoying together their new achievements on behalf of the Arges community", said Emil Raicov, Manager of the Cement Plant in Câmpulung.

The schoolyard where the pupils play and where the physical education classes take place is surrounded by the 2-storey school building and houses. Before the rehabilitation, there was a stone wall, dangerous for the children, the windows were unprotected and they could break over them, the stairs were damaged and unsafe and there were no railings at the school exit.

Thus, the works at the Secondary School CD Aricescu consisted both in the rehabilitation of the sports ground and the rehabilitation of the schoolyard. More specifically, the 16-meter-long wall was refurbished, protective panels were installed on the windows, the fence enclosing the yard was rebuilt and protective railings in the yard with mesh protection were installed. The holes in the sports ground were covered and the surface was leveled, an elastic tartan surface was applied, two football gates and two basketball hoops were installed. Furthermore, a stand with benches for the children was also set up.

The rehabilitation of the sports ground of the Secondary School CD Aricescu in Câmpulung is part of the programme “Holcim hands you the rally of good deeds”, initiated in 2014.

This is the fourth sports ground included in the program, as the company previously rehabilitated three other sports grounds: a basketball court at the Technical College in Câmpulung amounting to 19,000 Euro, a football field at the National College Alexandru Ioan Cuza in Focsani amounting to 15,000 Euro and a multisport field at the Theoretical High School Constantin Șerban in Aleşd amounting to 25,000 Euro.

Following this program, approximately 4,000 students from Romania have the chance to fully benefit from the physical education class under better and safer conditions in the schools where they study.
