Holcim (Romania) registered in 2007 very good results in terms of operational and financial performance. According to preliminary data, the turnover of the company in 2007 was of some RON 990 million (app. EUR 290 million), which represents an increase of 28% as compared to 2006, year when the company recorded a turnover of approximately RON 775 million (EUR 220 million).
"In 2007 we registered a very good progress on all three areas of sustainable development: economic growth, environmental protection and social responsibility thanks to our wonderful people. We continued last year to deliver quality products and services and our increased cement production in 2007 can be translated into 15,000 houses for Romanian families," said Markus Wirth, Country Manager of Holcim (Romania).
In 2007, Holcim (Romania) invested EUR 123 million in a series of projects for the modernization of production technology, environmental protection, business development, occupational health and safety, social and human resources projects.
Some of the projects developed in 2007 are:
- continuation of the modernization of the cement plant in Campulung;
- personal and professional development programs for employees;
- Structo® - the new type of cement, with multiple applications;
- the launch of the environmentally friendly concrete plant in Bucharest - Pantelimon and of the aggregates plant in Gligoresti, Cluj.
ACHIEVEMENTS AND NOVELTIES
In order to better satisfy the needs of its clients, in May 2007, Holcim (Romania) launched a new type of cement Structo®. This product is compliant with the new standards and can be used in plain and reinforced concrete, for various construction elements, in both civil and engineer works.
In July 2007 Holcim (Romania) launched its national call center for taking orders and dispatch of cement, filler and special hydraulic binders. The clients from all over the country can order the products of Holcim (Romania) just by calling the number 0248 506 600 from a landline or dialing *CIMENT, i.e. *246368, from the mobile networks of Vodafone and Orange.
In order to be closer to its clients, the company continued in 2007 to expand its networks of concrete and aggregates plants. Thus, in September, the 16th environmentally-friendly concrete plant was launched in Bucharest - Pantelimon as a result of an investment worth EUR 3 million. The fifth aggregates plant of Holcim (Romania) was launched in November as a result of an over EUR 3.5 million investment. The aggregates plant is located in Luna commune, Gligoresti village, and serves the counties of Cluj and Mures. The equipment for sorting, washing and crushing is fixed and has a capacity of processing ballast of 230 tonnes per hour.
The modernisation of the cement plant in Campulung, which started at the end of 2005, continued in 2007 and is expected to be finalised this year.
Last year, Holcim (Romania) supported through various activities (information materials, special preparation camp, roadshow in universities across the country) the second cycle of the international competition Holcim Awards for Sustainable Constructions - www.holcimawards.org. With prizes amounting to USD 2 million, the objective of the Holcim Awards competition is to motivate architecture and constructions specialists to find solutions to the society's current challenges such as: energy management, environmental protection, use of renewable resources, cultural values protection and so on. The closing date for entering projects into the competition is February 29th, 2008.
For the seventh year, Holcim (Romania) continued to invest in 2007 in programs for the professional and personal development of its employees. Complex leadership and management programs, communication, presentation and negotiation skills, time management, marketing, computer skills, foreign languages, and technical courses are only few of the tailor-made programs offered by Holcim (Romania) to its employees. Last year the training programmes amounted to EUR 0.9 million.
Starting with the scholar year 2007 - 2008, The Ministry of Education, Research and Youth included the educational project "Create Your Environment!" in the national curriculum of optional subjects for pupils from third to seventh grades. The project was initiated in 2004 by Holcim (Romania) and Concept Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Education. One of the most important components of the project was the elaboration of three sets of educational publications: educational support for pupils from the third to seventh grades, the methodological guide for teachers, and the dictionary of specialised terms.
